BC Lions try to take a bite out of the Argonauts

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Just a few weeks ago the BC Lions sat in the basement of the West Division, but now the team is in the thick of the playoff race. Tonight the Leos will try and continue their ascent up the standings with a win against the Toronto Argonauts.

The Argos have lost four straight games and have a 3-8 record, but in a weak East Division, the team sits in second place. Lions running back Andrew Harris says BC can’t take them lightly.

“They are competing at a high level right now. You can tell the confidence in their team is a lot higher then it has been during the season. We can’t take them lightly regardless of their record.”

The biggest key to victory for the Lions in the eyes of Coach Mike Benevides is limiting the damage done by Toronto quarterback Ricky Ray.

“A lot of people have been asking me, how do you stop Ricky Ray and Chad Owens? Basically you don’t stop those guys, you just try to contain them the best you can. We will have our hands full.”

Owens returns after being sidelined with a leg injury on August 23rd. The slotback becomes an immediate down field threat for the Toronto offence. Linebacker Adam Bighill says they can minimize Owens if they keep Ricky Ray in check.

“It is very important to collapse the pocket on Ricky Ray because you don’t want him sitting back there thinking he has time and let him move comfortably through all his reads. He is such a veteran quarterback that he is going to scan the whole field and if you are not on point, he is going to make you pay. It is very important to get him off his rhythm.”

History is on BC’s side tonight. The Argonauts have not won in Vancouver since July 2002, a stretch of 11 games.

Kickoff at BC Place is 7 p.m..
