Canucks begin exhibition schedule against San Jose

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The future of the Canucks will be on display tonight when Vancouver battles the San Jose Sharks in a split squad game. One squad will battle the Sharks in Stockton, California, while the other team will battle at Rogers Arena.

While the veterans will use this game as warm up for the upcoming season, many of the prospects will be trying to prove to the coaching staff that they belong on the team.

Bo Horvat has been pegged as one rookie who has a great shot at cracking the opening night roster. He says he is taking it one game at a time.

“Last year was my first crack at everything, so there are not as many nerves this time around. I am still a little nervous. I still have butterflies. You are still going out with the Canucks jersey on. It should be good. I can’t wait.”

Horvat will be playing in front of the home crowd tonight. He joins fellow youngsters Hunter Shinkaruk and Frank Corrado. Joining them will be three of the newest Canucks, Radim Vrbata, Derek Dorsett and Linden Vey. Vey was acquired from Los Angeles at the NHL draft in June and he is eager to prove he belongs on the Canucks roster.

“Obviously you want to earn it. Nothing is given to you in the game of hockey. Just because they have you pencilled in doesn’t mean that is the way it is going to be come the first game of the year,” says Vey. “For me I just want to come out and make sure I can be consistent and be solid through all three zones.”

Canucks fans will have to wait a little longer to witness Ryan Miller in action. He will sit tonight. Eddie Lack and Joe Cannata will split the goaltending duties in Vancouver. Joacim Eriksson and Jakob Markstrom will both play for the Canucks in California.

The puck drops at Rogers Arena at 6 p.m. and you can watch the game on Sportsnet 360. The game in California takes place at Stockton Arena and the opening faceoff will be at 7:30 p.m..
