Canucks powerplay ignites in win over the Flames

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Canucks came into Friday night’s game without any powerplay goals in the pre-season, but they tallied three times with the man advantage as Vancouver beat the Calgary Flames 3-0 at Rogers Arena.

Ryan Miller made his first start for Vancouver in goal and stopped all seven shots he faced in the first period. He played another 10:22 in the second period, but didn’t face another shot. Joacim Eriksson replaced him and turned aside 11 shots to combine with Miller for the shutout.

Vancouver got on the board 7:27 into the second period, as Linden Vey picked up a rebound and fired one past Doug Carr for his second goal of the pre-season. Chris Tanev and Henrik Sedin drew assists.

Just over three minutes later, the Canucks added to their lead, as Jannik Hansen hammered a one-timer in to make it 2-0. The Sedin twins were given the two assists on the goal.

In the third period, free agent signing Radim Vrbata got his first goal in Canuck colours as he was the beneficiary of some pretty passing by the Sedins. Daniel shovelled the puck over to him in the slot, and he quickly snapped a shot in.

The Canucks lost forward Brad Richardson to an undisclosed injury in the second period. Head Coach Willie Desjardins said after the game that he’ll be re-evaluated on Saturday.

Vancouver continues its pre-season on Monday when it hosts the Arizona Coyotes.
