Volunteers cleaning up the Fraser River in celebration of World Rivers Day

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Several local groups will be doing their part all weekend to keep the rivers clean and pristine.

Volunteers will be out cleaning up the banks of the Fraser River and other waterways this weekend in celebration of the 10th annual World Rivers Day.

The event started here in 1980 and was finally recognized as a global event by the UN in 2005.

Gadsen with the Chilliwack Vedder River Cleanup Society says hundreds are expected to come out, with more and more young people taking an active part every year.

“As many people know it has been a large run of sockeye this year and there has been a lot of people out there and there was a bit of garbage to deal with some of the careless fisherman [who] dropped line and things like that and it’s important to get it off the gravel bars.”

Gadsen says it’s wonderful to see so many people taking pride in their environment. “It is really great to see the young people come out there because you know this is the future. We are going to deal with littering and dumping along our roadways [and] waterways. It has got to be the young people that have to take pride.”

More than 70 countries are taking part in World Rivers Day, with millions around the world volunteering to clean waterways.
