Booklet distributed aimed at preventing young people joining ISIS

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A booklet is being handed out across Canada aimed at helping lowering the number of young people joining radical extremist groups.

The 37-page booklet is being distributed by the Islamic Special Services Association.

SFU’s Andre Gerolymatos says there have already been 130 Canadian young people recruited by ISIS, that’s 130 too many.

“These efforts are very good, of course, in and out themselves they’re not enough. I think Mosques have to play a bigger role in speaking out against terrorism.”

He says parents also need to pay careful attention to what their children are watching on TV and scanning on the Internet.

Gerolymatos adds these extremist groups often target young that feel excluded by society. “They go after the dienchanted, the loners, the young people who don’t feel like they fit in. This of course applies to a lot of young people of all nationalities. There’s always some young people who aren’t part of the gang at school, they’re not very popular, they feel isolated. They’re very susceptible to radical organizations, be it Islamic or non-Islamic.”

He says some people may be afraid, but it’s important for everyone to prempt terrorist activity before it gets worse in this country. “They shouldn’t be. Canada is a country that protects its own and I think ISIS hasn’t reared its ugly head here, but we need to prevent young people from becoming victims of this organization.”
