Deal reached between Ottawa, First Nations involving properties in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – An historic land deal involving properties in Vancouver and West Vancouver has been reached between the federal government and three First Nations groups.

The groups involved are The Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. The deal means equal ownership between First Nations and Canada Lands Company.

The properties include the former RCMP headquarters around Heather Street and West 33rd Avenue, the Jericho Lands on West 4th Avenue and a former Department of Fisheries property on Marine Drive.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson says while it’ll be another few years until they’re re-developed, he has an idea of what he’d like to see. “Obviously our needs focus on affordable housing, making sure there is green space. I think those are general concerns that will be raised, but there needs to be a good process around this. This is a big change and it’s good to see the First Nations participating directly in this.”

He adds the city will play a major role when it comes to rezoning. “My interest is in ensuring the voices of the people of Vancouver are heard in this, that there’s good consultation and engagement in shaping the future of those lands.”

Public consultation will begin next year.
