Canucks battle the Oilers in exhibition action tonight in Edmonton

EDMONTON (NEWS1130) – The Canucks exhibition schedule continues tonight against the Edmonton Oilers. With just two exhibition games left until the regular season begins, several Vancouver players will try and make a big impact this evening in Alberta.

Shawn Matthias is in a tough battle for one of the final roster spots. Assistant Coach Doug Lidster says Matthias will play centre tonight to see if he can make his mark on the team.

“Shawn is a good player and good players can play anywhere. We expect a little more comfortableness on his part. He is a natural centre and that is what we are looking for. We are fortunate that we have extra bodies where we can have that flexibility and we are just testing out different scenarios.”

Eddie Lack will start in net for the Canucks. Lidster says he continues to get to know Lack and has been impressed with what he has seen so far.

“Eddie has played twice now already and he has been very good so far, so it is nice to have strong goaltending and competition at all positions and he definitely provides that.”

While some of the Canucks remain focused on making the team, so of the other players are focused on getting healthy. Frank Corrado is still a few days away from returning to the ice. Brad Richardson and Zack Kassian will also miss tonight’s game with injuries, although they did skate this morning.

The puck drops at 6 p.m. You can watch it on Sportsnet 360. Listen for game updates every 10 minutes on the fives.
