CALGARY (NEWS1130) – The Canucks are in Calgary for the season opener.

The game will feature a handful of players making their Vancouver debuts. Ryan Miller will be in net for the Canucks. Nick Bonino, Luca Sbisa and Radim Vrbata will also wear the Canucks colours for their first regular season game with their new team.

Willie Desjardins will make his NHL coaching debut and he says he is very excited.

“One of the things that I think has been one of my strengths is that I love the game, I love to win and I live in the moment. When this moment comes, I am not thinking about anything but this moment and finding a way to win. I am pretty focused just on tonight and somewhere along the line I will think back on it, but probably not today.”

Linden Vey will also make his Canucks debut. Desjardins is looking forward to seeing Vey in action.

“He has a really good offensive side to his game. He is skilled and I think offensively he has great instincts. I like his attitude too. He wants to play, he wants to be a good player. He doesn’t just want to be on the team, he wants to contribute and that is a good sign.”

Kevin Bieksa is a game time decision with a leg injury. Nineteen-year-old Bo Horvat won’t play tonight as he deals with a shoulder injury.

As for Calgary, rookie Johnny Gaudreau will make his NHL debut. The pint-sized forward has unbelievable skills, but only stands 5’6 and barely weighs 150lbs. Jonas Hiller will make his Flames debut in net after signing with Calgary in the offseason.

The puck drops at 7 p.m. You can watch the game on Sportsnet. Listen for game updates every 10 minutes on the fives.
