Delta South MLA calling for a ban on special interest donations

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s another attempt to ban corporate, union and out of province donations during provincial elections.

Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington wants to see this happen; that’s why she introduced a bill this week. It’s been done at the federal level and Huntington is urging to see the government implement it at the provincial level.

She believes parties should stop enabling large sums of money from corporations and unions influence political decision making. “What we should be doing is encouraging the individual voter to donate to the person that they think best represents them and or to the party that best represents.”

She says it’s time to give the political influence back to people instead of corporations and unions that are able to shell out large amounts of money to politicians and parities.

“We should be honouring the people who put us in power and have voted to represent them and we should honour the individual voter, that’s who we represent and that’s who we should be listening to,” explains Huntington.

She adds the bill has gained support from the BC NDP and BC Greens, but not the BC Liberals.
