If you really love animals, you shouldn’t own one: Canadian vet

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – No matter how much affection you show Spike or Fido, a veterinarian in Quebec says if you really love animals, you probably shouldn’t own one.

In a column in the Montreal Gazette last week, Dr. Charles Danten says whether you’re leaving them home alone or taking them to the vet, pets don’t understand we’re well-intentioned.

“It’s beyond their cognitive capacities to understand what we’re doing to them. If you consider everything that we do to them, it’s pretty obvious that we don’t love animals,” he claims.

He’s also critical of a number of breeds that have inherent genetic health problems and the exotic pet trade, which he blames for animal cruelty.

“We manufacture different breeds of animals. These animals are afflicted with anatomical characteristics that make their lives hell.”

And while Danten isn’t saying you should take your dog off the leash and let it go, he’d ideally like to see the end of the pet industry.

“We destroy millions of pets in pounds euphemistically called ‘shelters.’ Hundreds of others are kept alive in shelters — these animals are unredeemable. They will never be adopted. They’re cooped up in cages.”

According to Denton, if you truly love animals, you’ll leave them alone.
