Canucks suffer first loss of the season versus Lightning

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Steven Stamkos scored twice in the first period and added an assist in the second as the Tampa Bay Lightning beat Vancouver 4-2 to end the Canucks’ unbeaten start to the season.

Stamkos opened the scoring in only the first minute of the game. He got in behind the Vancouver defense for a breakaway and beat Eddie Lack with a backhanded deke for his fourth goal of the season.

The Canucks answered back with a Chris Higgins goal off the rush. Nick Bonino used a slick toe-drag move to create some space and then set-up Higgins, who banged in his own rebound to make it 1-1.

Just 71 seconds after the equalizer, Stamkos scored again as he knocked in a loose puck in the slot.

Vancouver tied the game again on a powerplay in the second period. Daniel Sedin sent a cross-ice pass for Alex Edler and he stepped into a shot that beat Ben Bishop to make it 2-2.

The Lightning took the lead back for good late in the middle frame. With the Canucks shorthanded, Stamkos set-up Ryan Callahan for a one-timer on the left side, which got past Lack to make it 3-2.

Tampa Bay added an insurance goal in the third as Alex Killorn went hard to the net and found a loose puck before firing it home.

Lack made 20 saves in the loss, while Bishop turned aside 30 attempts from the Canucks to record the win.

The loss drops the Canucks record to 3-1-0 on the season. Vancouver will be back in action on Tuesday with a road game against the Dallas Stars.
