BC gov’t tables Greenhouse Gas Industrial Reporting and Control Act

By

VICTORIA (NEWS1130) – BC Environment Minister Mary Polak says greenhouse gas emissions established for the province’s developing liquefied national gas industry will be the cleanest and greenest in the world.

Polak tabled the Greenhouse Gas Industrial Reporting and Control Act today, saying BC’s emission benchmarks will be lower than any other LNG facility in the world.

She said the legislation will permit companies to purchase greenhouse gas offsets and contribute to a technology fund to reach the benchmark.

Environmental groups have raised concerns about increased emissions associated with extracting and burning natural gas at more than a dozen plants proposed for the BC coast that would see the gas shipped to Asian markets.

The BC limit set is at point-16 tonnes of carbon dioxide for each tonne of LNG produced, lower than pollution limits set in plants in Australia, Norway and the United States.
