Canucks get back on track by beating the Blues

ST. LOUIS, MO (NEWS1130) – Ryan Miller stopped 31 shots in his return to St. Louis and Vancouver scored three times in the third period as the Canucks beat the Blues 4-1 to snap a two-game losing streak.

Miller was playing his first game in St. Louis since leaving the Blues as a free agent in the off-season. He was traded to the Blues from Buffalo at last season’s trade deadline.

The Canucks opened the scoring in the first minute of play. Alex Burrows broke down the left side and snapped a shot, which Jake Allen stopped, but he could not control the rebound and Chris Higgins jumped on it and fired it home. Nick Bonino earned the second assist.

St. Louis tied the game on a second period powerplay. Kevin Shattenkirk fired one past Miller at 7:38 of the middle frame to make it 1-1.

The score remained tied until just shy of the five-minute mark of the third period. Miller made a terrific save on a point-blank chance, which sent the Canucks back the other way, and Bonino beat Allen with a quick shot to make it 2-1. The goal was Bonino’s second of the season. Higgins and Burrows earned assists on the goal, giving the trio two points each.

Vancouver extended the lead on a powerplay. Henrik Sedin set-up Linden Vey in the slot, and he beat Allen for his second goal of the year with 8:03 to play in regulation.

Jannik Hansen put the game on ice with a goal into the empty net with three minutes to go.

Canucks’ defenseman Alex Edler played in his 500th career NHL game in the victory. He registered one shot on goal and a +2 rating.

Vancouver (4-2-0) had lost back-to-back games to Tampa Bay and Dallas after starting the season with three straight victories.

The Canucks wrap-up their three-game road trip on Friday night as they’ll visit the Colorado Avalanche.
