Tributes for Cpl. Nathan Cirillo pour in

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – He had a smile as wide as his shoulders. That’s how a friend describes Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, the soldier killed on the steps of the National War Memorial in Ottawa yesterday.

Memorials for the member of Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada are springing up, not just in Ottawa but also in his hometown of Hamilton, Ontario where the regiment is based.

The spot Cirillo was shot remains behind yellow police tape.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper as well as a number of MPs paid tribute there this morning with Harper laying a wreath in his memory.

In Hamilton, the city’s mayor had the difficult task of comforting the fallen reservist’s family.

“I think the family is doing as well as can be expected but there are going to be many more days of grief and tears that’s for sure,” says Bob Bratina.

The family hasn’t spoken with the media, as they work to appoint a spokesperson.

Bratina says when he spoke with them, their reaction was to be expected. “There was another youngster in the family of about five and he came up to one of the aunts and said ‘I saw you crying.'”

Friends and family who took to social media had nothing but glowing words for the 24-year-old.

“Nathan was a good man. He would give anything to anyone. He was there for everyone” writes a close friend.

Cpl. Phillip Hanahhson solidered along side Cirillo with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada and told the Hamilton Spectator, “I’m hearing from them now about how moved they were to hear about not just the death of one of their own, but that it was Nathan —they were heartbroken.”

Messages also have been pouring in on a Rest In Peace Cpl. Nathan Cirillo Facebook page.
