Canucks open homestand with win over Capitals

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Henrik Sedin, Nick Bonino and Luca Sbisa had goals in a span of a minute and 47 seconds in the second period and Ryan Miller turned aside 20 shots as the Vancouver Canucks beat the Washington Capitals 4-2 at Rogers Arena.

The flurry of goals turned a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 lead for the Canucks. Marcus Johansson had opened the scoring for the visitors 5:28 into the second period.

Henrik pulled the Canucks level on the powerplay. He set up his brother Daniel in the slot but Justin Peters made a terrific save, however, the puck rattled around back to Henrik at the side of the goal and his wristshot hit Peters and went in.

A little over a minute later, Bonino broke in down the left side and snapped a shot past Peters for his third goal of the season. Sbisa scored just 25 seconds after that as his point shot beat Peters with Alex Burrows providing a screen in front.

The Capitals got one goal back before the second period was up. Liam O’Brien scored his first career goal to cut the deficit to one, but Vancouver iced the game with Radim Vrbata’s empty-net goal with 61 seconds to play. Vrbata was playing in his 800th career game.

Miller is 5-1 in his first six starts with Vancouver. The victory improves the Canucks’ record to 5-3-0.

Vancouver will play the second game of its three-game homestand on Tuesday when the Carolina Hurricanes pay a visit to Rogers Arena.
