Vision Vancouver eyeing goal of zero pedestrian fatalities in the city

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vision Vancouver is making another election promise.

If re-elected, the party says the city will help police crack down on bad cyclists and drivers who are putting pedestrians at risk.

It’s part of the city’s goal of having no pedestrian fatalities says Vision Vancouver Councillor Raymond Louie. He adds Vancouver Police will be given $500,000 to catch these culprits.

“Of course, there’s an education component that we hope to push out through the city. This initiative is meant to give the necessary resources to our Vancouver Police Department to initiate enforcement of the law and to do so throughout the year.”

Louie says it’s become clear people want something done about this.

“We’ve heard the frustration by both pedestrians, cyclists and drivers about some of the aggressive and inappropriate behaviour from some individuals whether they’re in a car or on a bike and we’re now making sure that the police are resourced in order to enforce those laws that will target these aggressive drivers and cyclists that aren’t following the law and causing problems.”

He adds it’s not the majority of drivers or cyclists, but the extra enforcement will help.

Pedestrians deaths in Vancouver are at their lowest rate right now since the city began keeping track several decades ago.
