Online video filmed in Cirillo’s hometown questions whether Canadians are racist

HAMILTON, ON (NEWS1130) – In the wake of the Ottawa shootings, a video that has surfaced online is garnering a lot of attention.

The three-minute video filmed in Hamilton, the hometown of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo who was shot to death at the National War Memorial last week, is meant to be a social experiment looking at racism in this country.

Two actors appear on-screen at a bus stop, one dressed to look like a devout Muslim.

The second actor comes up to him and starts berating him, telling him he wouldn’t feel safe with him on the bus before strangers come to his defence.

“You can’t stereotype and judge people by their clothes, or their nationality or anything else you know what I mean? What happened there (Ottawa), it was an incident of fanatics. Everybody cannot be punished like that,” says one man.

A number of others also come to the man’s defence. The video ends after one lands a punch to the face of the antagonizing actor.

The credits then roll, with one of the actors reaching this conclusion:

“The social experiment had a negative ending to it but you know what? It’s positive because he stood up for him and I appreciate that. That’s good, that’s good.”

The video has had over one million hits in just over two days.
