BC Law Society benchers vote to rescind Trinity Western accreditation

By

Benchers from the Law Society of BC have voted to rescind accreditation for Trinity Western University’s law school.

Twenty-five benchers voted to rescind the accreditation this morning, with just one opposed. There were a number of abstentions.

This decision abides by the results of a referendum among society members.

“Needless to say, I’m extremely disappointed that the principal decision made in April has been overturned by an effective popular decision of lawyers in the province,” says Trinity Western University president Bob Kuhn.

“I think it says to people of faith that unless they comply with the societal values or the secular perspective, they’re not entitled to… involvement in the public sphere,” he adds.

The school was initially granted accreditation, but its covenant banning students and staff from gay sex prompted lawyers to reverse their previous decision.
