Province threatens to use undercover officers to clamp down on Uber

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The province says it’s willing to go undercover to make sure Uber doesn’t launch illegally here in BC

This comes as the ride-share app appears on the brink of starting service in Metro Vancouver.

“We will have dozens of undercover enforcement officers who will be at the ready to ensure that anyone who is providing a taxi-like service is doing so with the proper licence,” says Transportation Minister Todd Stone.

Uber has been in big demand wherever it’s launched. But here in BC, the hurdles continue for the ride sharing service, with Stone saying the province will use undercover agents to clamp down on any unregulated drivers.

“So immediately I’ve directed our enforcement agencies to increase their enforcement and be on the ready for the potential launch of an Uber-like service in British Columbia,” says Stone.

Those who choose to ignore regulations and offer rides anyway could face a $1,200 fine the first time, while repeat offenders will be hit with a $5,000 penalty.
