Vision Vancouver leading the NPA in recent poll

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A pair of polls indicate Vision Vancouver is set to maintain control at city hall after the civic election in two weeks.

In a recent poll from Barb Justason, 46 per cent of those asked would vote for Vision Vancouver, compared to 32 per cent for the NPA.

UBC professor Max Cameron says it’s going to be a big task to force a change in government.

“It’s a pretty powerful position to be in,” Cameron says of Vision Vancouver. “So, for the NPA, the challenge has been — how you do dislodge a government that occupies a position that’s pretty close to what the average voter wants?”

He notes the NPA has poised itself more towards the right by saying it would take corporate money for schools, but he’s unsure of how that will resonate in a city which often leans left.

“We’re seeing differences, but what I’m not sure we’re seeing is any of these issues really catching fire with the electorate in such a way to make voters say, ‘I’m really going to get out and vote because I care a lot about this and there’s a lot at stake, and really there could be change and I like that or don’t like it,'” Cameron says. “I think that’s what’s missing — what’s missing is that sense of, ‘boy, there’s change looming and it’s either a good or bad thing, and I’m going to get out and participate.'”

The NPA is set to roll out its full platform tomorrow.
