Gale warning for Strait of Georgia; BC Ferries service may be affected later today

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Much of the rain has subsided for now, but there’s still the wind to worry about today.

News1130 Meteorologist Russ Lacate is taking some well-deserved days off but we asked our friends at Environment Canada about today’s storm system.

“We can experience gusts up to 90 km/h, especially over the southern sections of Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley,” says Andre Besson with Environment Canada.

“We do think the threat for localized flooding has diminished considerably at this point… we are more concerned about the wind, especially with this storm,” he adds.

Deb Marshall with BC Ferries says they are watching the weather to see if they have to cancel any sailings today.

“There is a gale warning in effect for both the Strait of Georgia south of Nanaimo, as well as north of Nanaimo. So, that is something that we are closely monitoring. It does look like the worst of the winds are going to hit late afternoon,” she tells us.

Marshall says this isn’t the first storm that has impacted sailings this week. “We’ve had a few already; we’ve had a couple that have impacted service in our northern Georgia Strait area. We’ve also had some up in Haida Gwaii yesterday.”

Wind warnings are also in place for Greater Victoria, Inland Vancouver Island, and the Southern Gulf Islands.

The heavy rains and strong winds from the Pacific low pressure system are expected to end tonight as the system moves inland.
