Canucks crushed by defending champion Kings

LOS ANGELES, CA (NEWS1130) – The LA Kings built up a 3-0 lead in the first period and cruised to a 5-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night. The loss was just Vancouver’s second in its past eight games.

The Canucks had an early chance to open the scoring with a short five-on-three powerplay, but they were unable to capitalize. That allowed Los Angeles to get on the board first just past the midway mark of the opening period as Marian Gaborik scored his first goal of the season.

Jake Muzzin and Anze Kopitar also scored in the first period, as the Kings took a 3-0 lead into the intermission.

Exactly midway through the second period, Los Angeles added to its lead. Tyler Toffoli cleaned up a rebound for his seventh goal of the season.

Jeff Carter scored early in the third period to make it 5-0 and then Chris Higgins snapped home his third goal of the season for Vancouver with just under eight minutes to play to end Jonathan Quick’s shutout bid.

Vancouver finished the game three players short, as forwards Radim Vrbata and Derek Dorsett, and defenseman Luca Sbisa left with injuries. They don’t have long to recover, as the Canucks wrap-up their four-game road trip on Sunday night against the Anaheim Ducks.
