Drivers need to slow down on the South Fraser Perimeter Road: Delta police

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A report on the new South Fraser Perimeter Road isn’t due until the end of this month, but the province is adamant there is no design flaw with the road that was said to be causing semi-trucks to roll-over at the Highway 91 Connector. However, there seems to be another problem with the route.

Delta Police Acting Sergeant Sarah Swallow says they are catching a lot of people speeding.

Earlier this week, she explains one of their members caught three lead-foots in a short amount of time going about 145 km/h in an 80 km/h zone — which is the limit along most of the route.

“It’s just people thinking, you know, it’s a new road with new tarmacs, it certainly sounds quiet when you’re driving on it. It’s a wide road so I think people just feel like it’s a highway.”

She adds there haven’t been any major crashes linked to speed.

There are signs on the road telling drivers, especially those of semi-trucks, to slow down to 20 km/h on tight turns.

A ticket for excessive speed is between $368 and $483. If you’re caught going 40 km/h over the limit, you will be fined and your car will be impounded for a week.

The province is expected to have finalized the report into the road by the end of this month.
