Canucks win wild one over the Oilers

EDMONTON, AB (NEWS1130) – The Canucks surrendered the lead twice before Yannick Weber put them ahead for good in the third period as Vancouver held on for a 5-4 win over the Edmonton Oilers.

Vancouver is now a perfect four-for-four against the Oilers this season, including three wins in Edmonton. The teams don’t meet again until April 11th in their final game of the regular season.

The Canucks opened the scoring shorthanded in the first period. Shawn Matthias forced a turnover and then sprung Jannik Hansen for a breakaway. Hansen fired a quick shot to beat Ben Scrivens for his fourth goal of the season.

Vrbata scored his first powerplay goal of the night 2:02 into the second period to make it a 2-0 lead for the Canucks.

Former Canuck Steven Pinizzotto responded for Edmonton with his first career NHL goal, but Chris Higgins re-stored the two-goal lead after a Keith Aulie giveaway.

Less than two minutes after the Higgins goal, the Oilers beat Miller twice in an 11 second span to pull level. First, Teddy Purcell scored with a shot off the face-off just seconds into an Edmonton powerplay, then Boyd Gordon surprised Miller with a quick shot from a tough angle to make it 3-3.

Vrbata scored with a blast to beat a screened Ben Scrivens with 2:50 left in the period, giving him two goals in the game and eight on the season.

Edmonton tied the game for the second time as captain Andrew Ference scored his first goal of the season 6:21 into the third period. Ference’s shot deflected off a Canucks’ stick and in.

Vancouver took the lead for good about five minutes later. Henrik Sedin hit his brother Daniel with a pass down the left wing, and then Daniel sent the puck back in front to Yannick Weber, who banged it home for the game-winner. Daniel had three assists in the win, while Henrik added two.

Edmonton thought it had tied the game with under 10 seconds to play, but the goal was immediately waved off because David Perron kicked the puck in. Video review upheld the call.

Miller made 28 saves to stay undefeated in his career against Edmonton.

The Canucks now return home to host Ryan Kesler and the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday night.
