Time out continues for Gastown steam clock

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A popular Vancouver landmark is getting a little TLC.

The Gastown Steam Clock is undergoing major repairs and has been replaced with a plywood box placeholder.

Most of the tinkering will be done to the internal mechanisms. Thirty-seven years ago Ray Saunders was commissioned by the City of Vancouver to design and build the clock.

He remembers the time he spent on the clock, and the financial impact the construction had on him personally. “I had to build the rest of the clock out of my pocket, and that’s when I went $23,000 in the red, when the clock was unveiled.”

At the time, it cost almost $60,000 to create. The clock will stay in one of the city’s work yards until it is returned to its original spot by mid-December.
