Canucks fall to Ducks in a shootout

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Bo Horvat scored his first career NHL goal for Vancouver, but Corey Perry and Jakob Silfverberg had shootout goals as the Anaheim Ducks took a 4-3 victory over the Canucks.

Ryan Kesler made his first appearance in Vancouver since being traded from the Canucks to the Ducks in the off-season. He had zero points and registered a -2 rating.

Anaheim got off to a strong start as Andrew Cogliano opened the scoring just 37 seconds after the opening faceoff. Silfverberg had a puck roll off his stick and right to Cogliano, who was able to fire it home.

The Ducks made it a 2-0 lead on a Ryan Getzlaf goal later in the first period. Getzlaf ran a give-and-go with Patrick Maroon, and then finished the play off with a backhanded goal into the top corner.

The momentum changed quickly in the second period. Horvat got the Canucks on the board just 3:08 in, as he finished off a pass from Derek Dorsett.

Just past the midway mark of the game, the Canucks took their first lead with goals just 30 seconds apart. First, Jannik Hansen hammered home his second goal in two games on a delayed Anaheim penalty. That goal was followed up by a Radim Vrbata tally after he was left alone in front of the Ducks’ crease.

Matt Beleskey pulled the Ducks level with 8:08 to play in regulation. Beleskey deflected a shot, which was stopped by Eddie Lack, but the Ducks forward was there to bury the rebound for his ninth goal of the season.

After overtime solved nothing, Nick Bonino and Vrbata were unsuccessful for Vancouver in the shootout, while Perry and Silfverberg scored for the Ducks. Kesler also shot for Anaheim, but was turned aside by Lack.

The Canucks played most of the night with only five defenseman. Dan Hamhuis caught an edge in the first period, and left with what appeared to be a leg injury. He did not return.

Vancouver will return to action on Sunday night when it hosts the Chicago Blackhawks.
