How will Surrey’s push for light rail affect other cities south of the Fraser?

SURREY (NEWS1130) – The incoming mayor of Surrey has made it clear: she’s determined to get light rail running in her city by 2018. She’s even willing to “go it alone” without TransLink, if necessary.

But how would that affect other cities south of the Fraser?

Ted Schaffer, Langley City’s mayor-elect, says he’s not concerned by Linda Hepner’s willingness to move ahead without the transit authority.

He tells us plans were formulated about five months ago for the region by the mayors of White Rock, Delta, Surrey, Langley Township, and Langley City.

Schaffer says he’s taken Hepner’s comments to mean working together with the other mayors. “To go at it alone, I’m not sure how it would be funded. It takes a whole region to make something like this work.”

“We’re looking forward to working together collectively for the region,” he adds.

Schaffer tells us he hasn’t had any meetings with Hepner, but says he’s looking forward to those meetings happening.
