More than $380,000 raised for Covenant House during last night’s Sleep Out

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – More than a dozen local politicians, executives and celebrities spent all of last night outside.

It was part of the Sleep Out awareness campaign and fundraiser for Covenant House, a youth shelter in Downtown Vancouver.

Riaz Meghji with Breakfast Television on CITY was among those who only had a sleeping bag and a piece of cardboard overnight.

“Last year, it was maybe -4. That cold was just bitterly cold. This year, it was a different element; it was a very Vancouver evening with the rain. It’s uncomfortable. And that’s just a glimpse at the reality,” he tells us.

“I don’t think it’s every going to be at a point where you do something like this and you think, ‘Yeah, that was easy.’ It’s uncomfortable, but it’s an important gesture,” he adds.

More than $380,000 was raised. The largest single donation was $25,000 from a man who says Covenant House saved his life back in the 1990s.
