How can you avoid getting scammed by a moving company?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Are you planning to move at the end of the month?

In the final installment of the News1130 Evening Show’s series on scams, we’re getting some advice from the Better Business Bureau.

Moving is stressful and expensive — and no one likes to do it.

Seumas Gordon with the BBB admits the moving industry has a bad reputation. “It’s high-pressure. So it can, in some cases, attract some villains in the industry that are going to want to take advantage of people that are in a pressure-cooker situation.”

So how do you go about picking a good moving company? Gordon says you should talk to family and friends for referrals and shop around for quotes.

“A lot of the red flags include a company that won’t have a land line or they won’t have an actual address — there’s no store front,” he warns.

When it comes to deposits, pay with plastic.

“Some big reputable companies will ask for this but they won’t ask you for it in cash. It’s something you can track through your credit card or a cheque,” advises Gordon.

Happy moving!
