Threats to Canada from ISIS should be expected: expert

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – As a video has shown up online featuring an apparent Canadian member of ISIS, one expert says this shouldn’t be completely shocking.

“We’ve been lucky so far,” says SFU professor Andre Gerolymatos. “We’ve had attempts that have been foiled, but now we’ve had two terrorist attacks that unfortunately were not foiled. This will become a recurring theme in our lives.”

Given Canada’s role in battling ISIS in the Middle East, threats of retribution like those outlined by John Maguire of Ottawa should be expected, says Gerolymatos, who references the dozens of Canadians who have flown out to join the terror group in Syria and Iraq.

“In a country of over 30 million people, there are enough cuckoo birds who would be drawn to the message of ISIS because they’re drawn to violence and killing, and they’re going to take it up and cause harm,” he tells us.

He says Maguire’s message appears heavily scripted, although it’s unclear whether he was forced into reading it.
