Local state of emergency in parts of South Delta

DELTA (NEWS1130) – A stretch of Boundary Bay and Beach Grove in Tsawwassen is under a state of local emergency.

“We have one part of our seawall, about 70 feet in length, that collapsed. It has opened that entire parcel to the sea,” says Delta Mayor Lois Jackson.

“So we are all standing by, obviously we have got people to protect the site and keep people away from the area given that we are now operating under a state of local emergency,” she explains. “Once you have a breach you are certainly subject to heightened concern.”

George Harvie with Delta’s engineering department says the people who live in the house that borders that part of the wall have been evacuated and crews are hoping the barriers they have put in place are strong enough to hold.

“We are very concerned recognizing that this is just a temporary wall, the force of the ocean could easily move the lockblocks so we have alerted the neighbourhood and handed out notices….we have alerted both Beach Grove and all the Boundary Bay residents because of the high tide and the expected storm surge.”

Engineering crews are also on standby to step in at a moment’s notice.

A state of emergency has also been declared in Courtenay because of flooding in some areas.
