Feeling lazy at work? Research suggests the boss may be to blame!

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – You’ve probably felt or experienced it at some point: the desire to do little or nothing at work.

A new study out of the US suggests that lazy streak at the office might not be your fault.

The research out of Kansas State University looked at the age-old nature vs nurture argument and compared twins to see if a person’s genetics could be faulted for a lazy approach.

Researchers placed around 60 per cent of the blame squarely on the work environment or the boss.

Ashleigh Brown with HR consulting firm Robert Half agrees. “If we’re expecting, as a boss or employer, to be more productive, we can only inspect what we expect of people. We’re also going to have to, as an employer, come to the table looking for that productivity in ourselves.”

She says open and direct communication is one of the best ways to coax the most out of employees.

“The biggest reason low morale occurs in the workplace is usually due to a lack of open honest communication. If they feel they’re being micro-managed, that’s also a cause for low morale.”

Brown says managers can incentivize employees with things like nights out, movie tickets or gift cards to better motivate them, adding the bottom line rests with the boss.
