New West Police looking for suspect in machete attack

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS1130) – Police are hoping you can help them find the man responsible for slashing at a car and people with a machete earlier this month.

It happened around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, December 7th. Police say the man went up to a car with the drivers and passengers inside it at a parking lot at Seventh and Belmont.

The driver managed to get away and pulled over nearby to check out the damage when the attacker showed up and again took out the machete; police say he started slashing, and left a man with a few cuts — but the victim should be okay.

Sargent Chad Johnston with New Westminster Police calls the whole thing very strange. “No report of any real verbal communication. It appears to be, or has been reported to us at this time to be just a random attack.”

The man is described as a white man in his twenties with a slim build. He was wearing a grey sweatshirt with a white circle and white lettering on the front, blue jeans with large white stitching, and what appeared to be the letter “U” on the back pockets. His running shoes had red soles and red laces.

If you have any information about this attack, you’re asked to call police at (604) 525-5411.
