Racial tensions are still high in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, Missouri after an unarmed black teenager was fatally shot by a white police officer on August 9th, 2014.

Michael Brown stole a box of cigars from a convenience store and after an exchange with Officer Darren Wilson, the 18-year-old was shot twice and killed. Many believe he was giving himself up to police.

Several witnesses reported seeing a fight in the SUV between the officer and Brown.

Instantly, hundreds gathered to protest what they call an over reaction.

“Don’t shoot, hands up. Don’t shoot, hands up. Don’t shoot, hands up,” erupted throughout the crowds.

“We are Mike Brown. We are Mike Brown. We are Mike Brown,” they chanted.

On November 24th, 2014, a grand jury decided not to indict Officer Wilson. That decision set off a wave of anger in cities throughout the globe.

In Ferguson, buildings were set on fire, people were looting, tear gas was let out and rubber bullets fired.

The jury was made up of nine white people and three black people. It took them a few months after reviewing evidence to come to a decision.

On Monday, we’ll unveil number 8 in News1130′s Top 10 of 2014.
