Winter officially begins Sunday

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) Does that mean we can expect some snow in the alpine, at long last?

Meteorologist Russ Lacate says the winter solstice arrives on Sunday at 3:03 p.m. “With that we usher in the new season and it’s likely going to be just as mild as today, and the sun might even come out.”

But things will likely change, “and looking further ahead, through the holidays and then into early January, there is a distinct trend towards cooler conditions, at the very least, that’s going to bring some fresh snowfall to the local hill and get our ski season back on track.”

A rainfall warning has been issued for Metro Vancouver. An intense Pacific frontal system will move onto the coast tonight. Up to 60mm of rain is expected to fall by Saturday evening before the rain eases to showers in the evening.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.
