VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver School Board has fired off a letter to the education minister, calling for him to reverse a decision that will eliminate funding for some adult students.
Adults that have already graduated, but are seeking upgrades in certain courses to get into post-secondary institutions, will now have to pay for those classes.
The elimination of funding will force school districts to charge for those courses, which are now offered for free.
Board chair Christopher Richardson fears many of those adults won’t upgrade if faced with fees. “Certainly the VSB’s opinion is that any impediment to a student being able to achieve education or the necessarily prerequisites to move forward and get a job, you know, we’re concerned,” he explains.
“It wasn’t one of those decisions that was discussed with us before the decision was made and I think that is why we are asking that it be reversed to enable us to understand the implications.”
Fifteen hundred students will be affected in the Vancouver school district alone.
