Swarm of earthquakes not cause for concern: expert

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – What’s being called ‘an earthquake swarm’ off the coast of Vancouver Island over the weekend has brought about concern in some ‘the big one’ may be coming sooner than we’d like.

A research scientist with the Geological Survey of Canada says they aren’t surprising, given the complicated tectonic plates in the area.

There were five quakes from 3:00pm Saturday through 3:00am Sunday, all of similar magnitude, the largest 5.0.

But Dr. Honn Kao says these aren’t releasing pressure for the big one, nor are they related to it.

“I don’t think we can draw specific physical links between this kind of activity and mega-thrust earthquakes.”

That said, he feels it’s a good reminder, the question is whether it comes tomorrow, or a century from now.

“It is for sure that the occurrence of the big one is coming.”
