Port Mann Bridge ready to tackle ice-bombs: TI Corp.

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Today is the first full day of winter and while we haven’t seen any issues yet, the company taking care of the Port Mann Bridge is trying to prevent past problems.

Transportation Investment Corporation has already had its crews out on the span to make sure everything is working fine with those de-icing collars that run up and down the cables.

Greg Johnson with TI Corp. says they are completely ready for any sort of storm.

“It depends on temperature, what kind of forecast is for snow, what kind of accumulation is expected and it could also be the time of day. It’s hard to say but typically between one and three centimetres of snow, that’s the kind of accumulation we’d be looking at before the cable collars were released.”

Johnson says it’s an automated system. “But it’s always informed by meteorologists and we have a weather control system and we have people that use cameras to take a look at the cables and make sure they’re being deployed in the right conditions.”

The ice-bomb event happened on December 19th, 2012 and a lawsuit is still ongoing from some of the people whose cars were hit.
