Try cutting down on sugar in 2015, suggests a fitness expert

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Sure it’ll help the medicine go down, but a spoonful of sugar can also lead to some nasty health issues.

Dai Manuel is a local fitness expert and along with those resolutions to work out and get your health on track, he suggests you work on cutting out sugar.

Dai says evidence that sugar is indeed toxic continues to grow — as does the global health crisis, from obesity and diabetes to cancer.

A couple of issues, according to Dai, are that added sugar contains a lot of calories, with no essential nutrients. It also causes tooth decay by feeding the harmful bacteria in the mouth.

For people who are inactive and eat a Western diet, large amounts of fructose from added sugars get turned into fat in the liver.

Dai admits it is tough to keep away from sugar, so you have to read the ingredient labels at the grocery store very carefully.

He grew up with a sweet tooth and it’s been a problem for him, but he fights it by making sure he gets in some exercise every day to help keep his blood sugar in check and cut down on the cravings.

And while you are working on cutting out the sweet stuff, it can be a tough road for kids who are tempted at birthday parties and inside almost every corner store. Dai and his wife let their girls eat sugar but then they have a good conversation with them afterwards — after the sugar high has led to a crash — to see how they feel and help them understand why they are feeling so lousy.
