Slippery backcountry prompts NSR to warn hikers to be prepared

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – As winter sets in with icy rain and snow finally falling on the local mountains, people need to be aware the avalanche rating at the treeline is expected to increase.

Leave a trip plan, be aware of bank stability and be prepared, these are just a few things Doug Pope with North Shore Rescue wants people to take into consideration before venturing up into local mountains,

“Knowing the conditions and being experienced for the type of terrain you are in.The biggest issues we see this time of year are related to winter conditions, being not prepared for the early darkness, or slips and falls on steep slippery terrain,” he explains.

Pope adds “Anytime in steep terrain there is potential for rockfalls like we saw in Lions Bay so people have to be wary of that.”

He adds it’s important to carry the ten essentials with you when you go up into the mountains.
