Additional 10,000 Syrian refugees to be offered asylum in Canada

By

OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – The Canadian government says it will take in another 10,000 Syrian refugees over the next three years.

The pledge follows a commitment made in 2013 to resettle 1,300 Syrians by the end of last year, a target the federal government missed.

But it says that most of those refugees have now arrived and the remainder will be in Canada by the end of March.

At the same time, Immigration Minister Chris Alexander says an additional 3,000 refugees from Iraq will also be resettled in Canada, for a total to date of more than 20,000 people from that country.

The promise to help more refugees comes with an additional $90 million in humanitarian assistance for people still in the conflict-ridden region.
