Canucks blanked by Flames

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Mikael Backlund scored on Calgary’s first shot of the game and Joni Ortio made 36 saves as the Flames shutout the Canucks 1-0 at Rogers Arena. Vancouver ended its five-game homestand with back-to-back losses.

The Canucks jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the shot department before Backlund opened the scoring at the 5:38 mark of the first period. David Jones got the puck to Eddie Lack’s right, fed a pass over to Backlund on the left and he got it over the line for his first goal of the season.

Ortio was terrific in the game for Calgary as he earned the first shutout of his career. He was under siege for the first two periods. He made 15 saves in the first period, and 13 more in the second.

Lack stopped 22 of the 23 shots he faced, which made it the second time in his past three starts that he allowed just one goal and still took the loss.

The Canucks briefly thought they had pulled even in the late stages of the second period. Henrik Sedin batted a puck out of the air and in, but it wasquickly waved off for a high stick and video review upheld the call.

Vancouver went 2-3-0 on its five-game homestand, and will now head out for five games on the road. The Canucks open the trip on Tuesday against the Nashville Predators.
