Abbotsford police inspector donating kidney to fellow officer

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – In addition to protecting the public, one officer in Abbotsford is helping to protect another.

Officer Roy McBeth was facing a future involving kidney failure and dialysis due to a diagnosis of Polycystic Kidney Disease, which runs in his family.

With a need for a live donor, he put out the pitch to friends and family for help.

Inspector Kevin Wright, along with several others, immediately began the medical process to see if they might be a match and ultimately Wright was picked as the best candidate.

“Once I looked into and realized that it’s something we can do, it’s like well I can help out here and that is kind of how it all come about. [It] feels nice to help Roy and his family out, he has amazing family and lots of support, same with the members here at the Abbotsford Police Department,” he explains.

“It’s nice to get the information out to others and maybe there are people out there that didn’t know that this program existed and there is the ability to help someone out who is waiting for a kidney and we don’t have to be dead to donate an organ,” Wright adds.

The surgery is planned for Wednesday, January 14th.
