PEMBERTON (NEWS1130) – The bodies of three ice climbers have been found near Pemberton.

The climbers were with a group of people trekking through the backcountry in the area of Joffre Mountain.

A member of that group — a skier — came across the bodies of one of the dead climbers, according to RCMP Sergeant Rob Knapton.

“The report came in to us by a group of skiers that was travelling with the climbers. They missed the rendezvous and they went looking for the climbers at the end of the day and located what appears to be one deceased person who may have fallen.”

After initially being notified at 1:30 a.m., the Mounties called in Pemberton Search and Rescue to assist.

The search started at first light; shortly after, the three bodies were found.

The climbers have not been identified, but police say they included a man and a woman, both in their thirties, from the Lower Mainland. Another woman in her late twenties was an international visitor.

They are believed to have been experienced in the backcountry.

Whistler Mounties are working with the BC Coroners Service to investigate the deaths.
