Whitecaps select defender Tim Parker with first round draft pick

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Whitecaps bolstered their back end with their first round pick in today’s MLS Superdraft. With the 13th overall pick, the Caps selected Tim Parker. The 21-year old played for the St. John’s University Red Storm of the NCAA Big East Conference for the last four years.

Coach Carl Robinson says the Whitecaps were very keen on Parker from the beginning.

“We are just trying to add to our important crop of young players we already have. We have obviously lost a little big of experience at the centre half positions, so adding Tim was crucial for me. I thought he was the best player in the combine and he showed all the fundamentals a young centre half should have to be successful in this league.”

Team President Bob Lenarduzzi thinks Parker can make an immediate impact in Vancouver.

“Parker fits a void for us right now. He will come in and he will battle for one of the back up centre back positions. There is a lot going on and ultimately we felt it was the best decision to take him.”

With the Whitecaps second round selection, they picked forward Tay Banjo from the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.

Expansion club Orlando City F-C owned the first overall pick and selected Canadian Cyle Larin. The 19-year old from Brampton, Ontario had 23 goals in 39 games over two years as a forward the University of Connecticut.
