Improved steam clock returns to Gastown

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – After two months of repairs, the steam clock has returned to Gastown.

New steam pipes, clear glass and a fresh paint job are just a few of the upgrades made to the iconic landmark.

“It’s a very important part of what Gastown is for all the tourists and it’s going to be a great feature now because with the modifications that have been made, they are really going to able to see the intricate workings of the clock,” Ken Brown with the City of Vancouver explains.

He adds this is the first time in the clock’s 37 years on the corner of Abbott Street and Water Street that it has been removed for repairs. “It’s more reliable for keeping time, but it also minimizes the amount of maintenance work that we have to do on the clock.”

Many people, both locals and tourists, were on hand to watch the unveiling and take pictures.

“Great to see this, it was my first time seeing it,” says one woman.

“Awesome to have it back again, it’s been gone for too long you know, it’s nice to have it back. The tourists will appreciate it,” another man added.

Brown notes the project came in over budget, costing $16,000 more than expected.
