More advertising not on horizon at Vancouver rinks and rec centres

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Now that the NPA dominates the Vancouver Park Board, will we see more advertising on park property to generate much needed revenue?

Ads, such as those along the boards in rinks, are common in many other municipalities, but are almost absent in Vancouver.

However, the new board chair isn’t looking for a major shift in the way things are done now.

John Coupar points out Vancouver rink boards do display public service announcements but he isn’t clamouring to open the gates to other advertisers.

“The advertising that’s there now, we do get revenue from it. I think you need to carefully consider advertising. People want to enjoy themselves in parks and facilities but don’t necessarily want to be bombarded with advertising when they’re doing that.”

He admits the park board has no firm policy on advertising, but says one is being developed and should be ready to be debated in about a year.

“People always have concerns about privatization and corporate sponsorships in parks. We are really careful about that. The board has always been careful about that, even before I was on the board.”

He notes that many events that take place on park board property are sponsored, but are only short-term in nature, such as the Celebration of Light.
