Wet weather expected to cause minor avalanches

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – All this rain is expected to cause some avalanches in the backcountry.

Forecasters are predicting wet, loose snowslides.

Avalanche Canada describes it as being similar to a Slurpee going a mountain.

Joe Lammers with the group says right now the danger rating is high. “On the Coast it has been a more simple snowpack, especially with the moderate temperatures we’ve seen. In the Interior of the province we have had really tricky conditions.”

He says the rain could also cause deeper layers of the snowpack to collapse. “I don’t really expect that sort of activity to be really widespread, but where it does exist or those conditions do exist there is potential for some larger, more destructive avalanches.”

Lammers expects the danger rating to be lowered to moderate for the south coast region over the next few days.
