City of Vancouver considering parking rule changes

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If you’ve racked up a pile of parking tickets in Vancouver, you may want to get to know your friendly neighbourhood tow-truck driver — even if you’ve paid them off on time!

The City of Vancouver is considering a rule change.

It’s looking at allowing an illegally parked vehicle to be towed if the driver has gotten a certain number of tickets over two years, even if all those tickets have been paid.

“Right now, it’s based on if you have three unpaid tickets, and so we would look to very likely a larger number of tickets, whether or not they’re paid and unpaid. So, it’s about changing the behaviour of the driver,” says Director of Streets, Taryn Scollard.

She adds, “Every year, we go through and we look at our different policies in parking, similar to neighbourhood parking, things like that, and so this was just one thing that came up in the last little bit around whether or not we tow based on the number of tickets.”

Right now, your car will be towed if you’re parked where you shouldn’t be, and have three tickets from the last two years that haven’t been paid.

The City claims this is not about revenue, and is all about having everyone follow the rules.

This is all in the very early stages — it’ll likely be several months before a report from city staff comes back, and council is able to look at this.
