Local charity uses Super Bowl to raise issue of violence against women

RICHMOND (NEWS1130) – A group of local athletes and celebrities is using the Super Bowl to raise the issue of violence against women.

A Richmond charity is getting involved after spousal homicides hit a five-year high in BC.

It’s called “BC’s Toughest Men“, with people like the BC Lions Solomon Elimimian and ex Canuck Ryan Walter lending their voices to the issue.

Organizer Mark Miller with Richmond’s Chemo Community Services says Sunday’s launch is all about raising awareness among men in particular.
“Sports is a good backdrop to begin to do that. We know that men are very engaged in the Super Bowl and associated activities with it and to put a serious issue in front of men, it’s a good opportunity to do that,” he explains.

“Traditionally it has been looked at a little bit more as a women’s issue and driven a bit more from a feminist perspective and we are sort of taking the positioning to really make some changes in this area, that men need to work together with women and stand beside them on this one.”

The goal is to raise $100,000 for second-stage housing in Richmond for women and children escaping violent situations by March 8th.
